A LONDON SOUND

Tempo Tantrum began life as a series of monthly Friday nights at the Mint Bar, Clerkenwell in October 2000. Bringing together different beat-based styles - 2-step, breaks and broken beat - the night flourished before relocating to Living on Coldharbour Lane in Brixton in 2001. From there, the crew continued to serve up a mix of rolling beats, with monthly guests adding their own flavour to a the South London events.

Over the years guest DJs have included Dee Kline (Rat Records), Tipper (Fuel Records), Landslide (Hospital Records), J Da Flex (1Xtra), Aquasky (Passenger Records), Danny McMillan (TCR), DJ Quest (Cyberfunk Records), Horsepower Productions (Tempa) and Jason Sparks (Botchit and Scarper).

THE FULL SPECTRUM

In 2003, Tempo Tantrum moved to the Brixton Telegraph, joining forces with the Kenetix drum n bass crew to supply the full spectrum of beats to South London. With DnB in one room and a mix of breaks, broken beat and dubstep in the other, Tempo Tantrum lived up to its name and has since become renowned for eclectic events with a vibe that is second to none. The mission was simple - to join the dots between all the different mutations of breakbeat. Meanwhile, the residents spread their wings, linking up with other nights including Breakbeat Connection and Gridlock at the Fridge.

RESIDENTS

Reza, Matt Juice, Intajah and Xerxes have all been playing for some years. Reza and Intajah represent the junglist influence, having together presented a weekly drum and bass show in Oxford during the late 90s mixing up DnB with the likes of Total Science and DJ Lee. Matt Juice lends a different groove, intermingling breaks with nu-jazz while Xerxes' nu skool breaks are directed squarely at the dancefloor.

On the drum and bass side, Lady K keeps the crowd rocking with smooth DnB flavours before the monthly guests take to the stage while DVS MC gives it up on the mic, showing why he's the host with the most.

TEMPO TANTRUM RECORDS

Tempo Tantrum has brought its unique flavours to vinyl, with the label's first two releases by Reza to be followed in 2004 by contributions from Matt Juice and Intajah. Check these out here

Reza

Reza has been schooled in beats from hardcore through drum 'n' bass to 2 step. Playing alongside the likes of Total Science and DJ Lee back in the day, he was a co-founder of the Tempo Tantrum nights and label and is a current resident DJ.

Low-riding breakstep is the name of his game which he now plays with a few broken beats thrown in for good measure. He has DJed on Groovetech.com and Flex FM and at nights including Trouble On Vinyl and Breakbeat Connection in London.

In the studio he has captured his own unique beat focused sound with the first two releases on the Tempo Tantrum label. Recent productions are to follow soon and are available on promo CD.

Matt Juice

Matt Juice has been DJing for the last eight years, originally playing UK and US House. From this he moved into broken beats and nu jazz sounds, bringing a more chilled flavour to the Tempo Tantrum styles.

He co-founded the Tempo Tantrum nights and record label, is a current resident DJ and has played at the Gridlock nights at the Fridge and abroad at Blue Note in Cologne, Germany.

His DJ sets reflect a fusion of the styles that have influenced him through the past carrying a sound marked by soulful vocals and jazz melodies drifting in and out of deeper breakbeat cuts.

Matt Juice is working on his own material for release this year.

Xerxes

He has been instrumental in carrying the TT flavour to different corners of the underground spectrum and regularly guests for other London events, including Redtrip and Fusion.

Intajah

Intajah has been throwing down his bassy breakbeat since TT's inception, after treading the hardcore/ jungle/ drum n' bass path since 1992. He has played on various London pirates and hosted a show on Oxford's Oxygen FM alongside Reza, and has warmed up for the likes of Andy C and Grooverider at the 'Metro' nights.

Intajah has been busy in the studio and plans to release fresh material in 2005.
